Limbo
Tenri Gallery, New York _ 2017
"LIMBO: Youngkil Kang" is a thought-provoking exhibition at the Tenri Cultural Institute in New York, featuring a collaboration with renowned Korean actress Suae. The exhibition presents photographs of reclining women—portrayed underwater in a serene yet unsettling state that suggests suspended life without breath, but not without thought. These subjects, including Suae, appear caught in a metaphorical "limbo", reflecting heightened introspection and mental activity.
Artistically, the works are impressionistic, breaking space into vibrant colors and expressive lines. A grid-like pattern—created by the water’s surface tension and refracted light—adds to the visual complexity, blurring detail and enhancing the dreamlike quality of the imagery.
